Last week’s column on recycling drew a swift response from the industry. The letters are being published as soon as space allows. Nothing draws response faster than questioning sacred cows and recycling is, to many folks, a sacred cow. A sacred cow is one that must be worshipped, not questioned and heaven forbid that someone might suggest a better way to accomplish the stated dogma of an industry. That’s what happens when you get fads, ideology and misplaced good intentions all bundled up in politics.

It appears, to me, that many seek a change, believing that with the change will come peace, peace of mind, freedom from conflict. Does it stem from not simply being in the moment?

Many issues cross political lines. Recycling in Manitoba is just such an issue. It is a darling issue for both the NDP and the PC governments. It is also largely a well-intentioned farce. Recycling and the two cent levy on beverage containers, is an example of a good start. But that’s about where it ends. For over two decades now we have had a two cent levy on drink containers. It is supposed to finance recycling of containers and some other products. It raises a lot of money, but it doesn’t really accomplish recycling and here’s why.

By the end of this year, the road may be paved for ride sharing services, such as Uber, to operate legally within the province. On March 20, the provincial government introduced Bill 30, which will deregulate the industry and open the door for new players. In essence, the bill will dissolve the Manitoba Taxicab Board and move responsibility for regulation of vehicles for hire to municipal governments.

During the winter, one could be forgiven for forgetting that we live in an agricultural area. Far from sight, the cows are in the corrals and the crops are in the bins. But with each passing day, we are reminded of the importance of agriculture to the region. Each warm day, we see more farm equipment on the roads and in the fields and cows and calves can be seen out in the pastures.
