Nine-year-old Carson Burr of Rapid City has been featured in these pages of the Rivers Banner several times in the past two years. He was born with a heart defect and has been fundraising for Winnipeg’s Children’s Hospital for two-thirds of his life (six years).

In a March 2010 edition it was reported that Rivers Ukrainian Society had officially disbanded and all remaining funds ($43,000) were given to Riverdale Health Services District Foundation. That column was never corrected as in error so a pleasant surprise came last month when members of Rivers Train Station Restoration Committee Inc. (RTSRC) received a donation from the society.

On Nov. 2, 1974 Rapid City area residents gathered at their museum to witness the official opening of Rapid City Regional Library. Skyrocketing heating costs, accessibility issues because of its location on the second floor and crowded quarters because of the burgeoning bevy of books, were reasons for construction of a new 38- by 42-foot building on Third Avenue.

November 11 ceremonies are steeped in tradition but this year’s event in Rivers saw a number of changes. Held for years in Rivers Theatre, the service was moved in the late 1990s to Rivers Collegiate because the theatre was no longer fit for public service. This year, the Remembrance Day ceremony was held in Riverdale Community Centre because the gym floor at the school is nothing but a base of gravel and the stage is undergoing repairs.
