Riverdale Harvest food bank has been in our new location (at Zion Church), with a new schedule for disbursements, for a couple of months now. We are happy to see people are finding us at our new location. We now have a drop-in disbursement method. Anyone can attend anytime between the hours of 10 a.m. and noon on any Thursday. You can come as often as once every two weeks to pick up a hamper. We are striving to make access easier and more consistent for both clients and volunteers.

Learning more about Parkinson's

By Dianne Kowalchuk

Publicity

One of the goals of Women’s Institute (WI) is to provide education for its members. Rivers WI, like most branches, plans its programs a year in advance so members know what’s coming up and when. In November one of the many topics that were suggested was Parkinson’s. Pat Wood took on the task of finding a speaker; members welcomed Charlotte Potwondy, Westman co-ordinator for Parkinson’s Canada, to the April meeting.

Royal reception for Rivers residents

By Sheila Runions

Banner staff

In mid-February Lt.-Gov.  Janice Filmon announced her plan to host a birthday party on April 21, the day Queen Elizabeth turned 90. The Queen’s representative in Manitoba invited people born in 1926 to contact her office to express their interest in attending the afternoon party at Government House. Filmon was prepared to invite the first 60 people (and one guest) who responded but her office was so overwhelmed with applications that a morning tea party was held as well. Each party had 150 people and even then, people were turned away because the House could seat no more. Among the guests who attended the afternoon affair were Rivers’ own Georgina Bollman and Bertha Shelvey, who moved to Brandon after living in Rivers for 22 years (1989-2011).

It was time to retire 18 years ago, that’s why Gord Oleksuk built a purple martin house. It was something to do. More than 100 purple martin houses later, he’s still building them in the little shop beside his house at the junction of Highway 10 and 25, sometimes called Glanton Corner. At 81 Gord says he still has a few left to build. Gaby, his wife, is fine with that for now but next winter she’d like to be living in Brandon – and the shop may be just a memory.
