My perspective - Give and take

When the federal or provincial governments look at agriculture in the context of emissions and carbon taxes, it’s usually seen as a contributor.  It’s true that agriculture is a consumer of fossil fuels— burned in tractors and combines or to heat greenhouses— but those in the industry also know that agriculture is on the other side of the equation. According to the 2016 Census of Agriculture, there were 159 million acres in agricultural production, giving farmers a huge role to play in activities like carbon sequestration and managing or mitigating the effects of more severe weather.

Right in the centre - It has been a good year

As I prepared to write this year end column, I looked back at last year’s. In it, I noted it had been a tough year for newspapers in general, as several papers had closed. This year hasn’t seen nearly as many closures across North America and none in Manitoba.

In fact, there have been some new papers start up in the U.S., but I am not sure if there have been start-ups in Canada.

On Friday, Neepawa area residents received some news that seems to have become all too common. At around lunch time, the Town announced that the change rooms at the Flats would be closed to the public and locked for the weekend, following another incident of graffiti. Despite cameras, problems with graffiti and vandalism at the site have been ongoing.

Right in the centre - O come let us adore Him!

The familiar strains of this hymn of the Christian church is well known around the world. The words and music have implored millions of listeners to come and adore the Baby Jesus and to follow him. The name Jesus means “saviour”or “rescuer”.

My perspective - Ready or not

Over the next decade, it’s estimated that about $1.5 trillion worth of business assets will change hands in Canada. The success or failure of this transfer will have a huge impact on Canada’s economy and I’m not convinced we’ve done all we can to prepare.
