The Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra, together with the Symphony Under the Sky Event Committee is very disappointed to announce the cancellation of the scheduled performance at the Selo Ukraina site in Dauphin, Manitoba. A temperamental weather forecast for the weekend made for a difficult decision.

MYJC update

On Aug. 1 the Odd Job Squad hosted a car wash that was very successful. One of the best parts about my job is nurturing young kids into young adults who are ready to join the work force. Rivers is very supportive of this program, and for that, I invite you to give yourself a big pat on the back!

Century Farm celebration

On Friday, Aug 8 more than 50 relatives and neighbours of Gordon Hammond gathered in his spacious and well-maintained farmyard in the Tarbolton district (southeast of Bradwardine). Inside a separate building from the house were displays of family pictures and framed Manitoba Centennial Farm awards. Issued in 2014, the land at SW 8-11-22W, RM of Daly, has been farmed by the Hammond family for more than 100 years.

Many thanks to Joanne Messer from Tisdale for calling me up and asking for some alternative methods for troubles she is having with her roses — that conversation enticed me to write this column. This is a challenging summer for gardeners everywhere with monsoon rains, flooding, cool temperatures and sweltering heat.
