Five years ago Ducks Unlimited Canada’s (DUC) contacted Rivers Collegiate Institute (RCI) to consider being one of 11 Canadian schools to join the national network of wetland centres. At that time, principal Mike Klassen reported in Rivers Banner, “Even to be considered for this is worthy.” These centres were created to engage all levels of youth, with a focus on high school students mentoring their elementary-aged peers.

Rivers Legion began hosting a Vimy Ridge banquet in 1964 for First World War veterans. More than 100 veterans from more than 20 branches would attend the meal, prepared by the auxiliary and served by Second World War veterans. As time and veterans passed, the tradition was slightly modified; women began serving Second War vets and in 1990 they officially changed the name to veterans’ banquet.

A cousin from the west coast was visiting in Southern Manitoba and I was invited to join several family members first in Morden and then to Winkler, for a sit down supper. Caring deeply for my two remaining paternal aunties, and willing to reconnect with cousins, I scheduled my day and headed south.

Double winner: Daphne Hall was pleased to have been awarded “Best of Show” as selected by Pauline Noordenbos owner of Mama Bears Quilt Shoppe. The second award was “Viewer’s Choice”, Hall received the most votes from those who attended the show. This Baltimore Album quilt took nearly 20 years to complete with its intricate handwork.
