At the Beautiful Plains Credit Union (BPCU) Annual General Meeting on Apr. 11, customers, staff and reps from other Credit Unions gathered in what has become an annual tradition. Beef dinner at the Neepawa Legion, the introduction of guests, a review of the financial statements, a word puzzle and of course, vice-chairman, Keith Jury’s corny jokes.

BPCU manager Gord Sylvester reported on the 2018 financial year and that member loans increased by 19.7 per cent and that CU assets rose by 12.2 per cent. Sylvester noted that they are putting additional monies into reserves in preparation for new regulations being brought in by the Province of Manitoba. Net income for BPCU rose from $501,118 in 2016 to $624,156 in 2017.

Chairman Ron Jesson opened the meeting and called for a moment silence in memory of the members who had passed away in the past year and also to honour the victims of the Humboldt Broncos hockey team bus crash.

A fifteen year employee award was presented to Marla Steen a 25-year Director Award was given to Greg McConnell.

A new project has begun

This past year, the BPCU established a Marketing Committee which received applications from community project for funding. Five groups were awarded funds including the Glenella School Parent Advisory Council for the raised their bed garden project and the Neepawa Scouts to replace some very old camping tents. Also receiving funds were the Brookdale Parent Advisory Council for the Maker’s Space project, the Neepawa and Area Cross-country Ski club to purchase loaner skis for new skiers and the Glenella Arena for lighting and repairs.

The audience was asked to submit questions and the only submitted question was about the future of the Glenella branch and the response from the board was that as long as the members were using it it the hope to keep it operating
