A busy January for Rivers Police Service

Loyal readers of my monthly column may recall that in 2017 Rivers Police Service were called upon 618 times or less than twice a day. This year, even though it’s only one month of reporting, is not going to average so well. We attended to 82 calls in January, which is more than 2.5 each day. Here are the specific breakdowns.

There were eight Criminal Code cases: one other violent crime such as extortion, uttering threats, etc., two thefts under $5,000 and five various other crimes such as breaches, public mischief, harassing phone calls, etc. On the traffic side of things, there were no federal charges, 16 provincial charges (all under “other” which includes speeding, driving an unregistered vehicle or without a licence, etc.) and one accident. Members enforced the Intoxicated Persons Detention Act twice and the local animal control bylaw once.

Of our 82 calls last month, 30 of them were to assist others, in the form of 10 Criminal Records Checks, 11 rural calls, eight assists for other agencies and one public assistance. Two dozen of our calls fell into the miscellaneous category, namely one mental health call, one community relation, three alarms, five noisy parties/disturbances, one Child and Family Services and 13 other miscellaneous, which includes unfounded complaints.
