The thermometer registered 25 degrees below zero Thursday morning in town, the biggest toboggan slide the mercury has taken this winter; but nobody is complaining. It has been a fine season all told and even if this cold spell continues, it can’t last much longer.

The anniversary, next Sunday, of the Bank of Montreal’s local branch marks the completion of half a century in the service of Neepawa. The Merchants Bank of Canada, long since merged with the B of M, first opened an office here on Feb. 1, 1898. The bank’s original premises were located at the corner of First Avenue and Hamilton Street. Before 1898, the building has housed the late Dr. David Harrison’s private banking business, one of many similar enterprises which flourished in Canada during the last century. As Neepawa and the surrounding district developed, the bank’s business out-grew its office facilities, and in 1904 the present building was erected. Planned to provide extra space for an increasing volume of transactions in future years, the building on Mountain Avenue constitutes a proof of the bank’s faith in the progress of this community.

The collision between an eastbound Manitoba Motor Transit bus and a truck stopped on the No. 4 highway about 6 p.m. Saturday evening resulted in serious injuries to the bus passengers. According to police the Brandon bus coming to Neepawa struck the truck on a rear corner of the grain box, ripping the full length of the box, and spilling considerable amounts of grain on the highway. Reports stated warning flares had been put out on the road when the truck stopped. Road conditions were reported to be icy and visibility low.

The doors of the Roxy Theatre in Neepawa - Which have been closed since April 1 - will re-open for the showing of movies next Friday evening. The new owner of the Theatre, Mervyn Ray, has announced that the theatre will now operate on a full seven days each week, with four changes of movies each week. Mr. Ray has also announced that “The Sound of Music” will be a future attraction, to be shown at the Roxy Theatre in April. Among other box-office hits which are to be shown here in the future are: “The Blue Max,” “Hombre,” “To Sir With Love,” “A Man For All Seasons” and “The Family Way.”

We hope you’ll take note of the ad announcing the opening of the Salvation Army’s Family Thrift Store. The Thrift store located through the Mill Street entrance of the Oddfellows Building will be taking the place of the Rummage Sales the Salvation Army has been running up to now.

Arnold and Ingrid Christmann are the new owners of Neepawa’s Westway Inn. They took over the business on January 1, after a five year stint as owners of the 21-unit Grand Rapids Lodge. Arnold is optimistic about the new business and feels there is opportunity for expansion. “I’m looking forward to participating in this community although I am limited by the fact that I have a 24-hour business,” says the soft spoken owner.

Myra Bennet and Brian Bailey received standing ovations as they were presented awards recognizing community service at the Neepawa and District Chamber of Commerce annual meeting last Wednesday. Bennet received the Community Service Award of Merit, which recognizes former and current residents who have contributed to the community through volunteer work. Bailey received the Citizen of the Year Award, given to recognize exemplary service and dedication to the community.

Safeway stores across Canada, including Neepawa, have launched the 10th annual Safeway We Care fundraising program. This year, the Neepawa Safeway is raising money in support of the Touchwood Park Association. In the nine years since the fundraiser has been underway, over $14.5 million has been raised for worthy causes.
