Kenton's Remembrance Day service

People gathered at Kenton Memorial Hall on Saturday, Nov. 11 at 10:45 a.m. for the Remembrance Day service, held to honour and remember those who served and are serving today for our freedom. Pianist for the morning was Eileen Kent; emcee was Kenton Legion Branch No. 118 President Mike Ramsden. He welcomed everyone and told us Shilo soldiers were not in attendance, due to bad weather the night before. Everyone sang O Canada.
Marianne Whyte gave the call to remember, followed by the reading of the honour roll by our Second World War veteran Jack Houston. Last Post was followed by two minutes of silence, then Reveille was played, both on a horn by Irene Todd.
The service continued with the laying of wreaths as people were escorted by the military. John Hipwell laid the first wreath for the federal government, on behalf of MP Robert Sopuck; the provincial government, MLA Doyle Piwniuk; municipal government, RM of Wallace-Woodworth Reeve Denis Carter; Canada's military, Shilo Maj. Greg Keach; RCMP, Virden, Sgt. Ed Riglin; Branch No. 118, Jack Houston; Kenton Legion Ladies Auxiliary, Mary Curtis; Kenton 4-H club, Foster Tolton.
Jack Houston gave the act of remembrance and the crowd replied, "We will remember them."
Margaret Sangster made a presentation of a Remembrance Day wall hanging and told how it came to be. It was displayed later that morning in the clubroom.
The first hymn of the morning was For the Faithful who have Answered, which was followed by scripture reading by Marianne Whyte. As the speaker wasn't able to attend, due to weather, Jack Houston said a few words to the crowd to not only remember the soldiers, but to remember all those people behind the scenes who helped in time of war.
Marianne led us in prayer and we all recited The Lord's Prayer. We sang O God, Our Help in Ages Past as the final hymn.
Announcements were then made by Mike Ramsden, who expressed appreciation for all those who helped to make the service possible and to the auxiliary for arranging a potluck in the clubroom. The service ended with the singing of God Save the Queen.
