Riverdale Palliative Care (RPC) organization has been very fortunate to be the recipient of fundraising dollars from three different events in the past month. On May 12 HELP (Helping Each Local Project) held a purse mystery auction and raised $2,660.04 which was donated to RPC, following community voting which determined which organization would receive the funds raised. Thanks to Heather Gray and her amazing HELP committee for putting on this fun-filled event!

On June 3 staff at The Trestle Greenhouse in Rivers put on a barbecue which raised $305 for RPC.

On Sunday, June 4 RPC held its Hike for Hospice fundraiser. The event is held annually to not only raise funds for the local organization, but to also remember and honour the clients who have died in the past year. It is also a time to celebrate the efforts of the many dedicated caregivers and volunteers who care for those who are facing life-limiting illnesses and for their loved ones. To ensure that the burdens of suffering, loneliness and grief are lessened, these volunteers work many hours with those approaching death. Six people collected pledges totalling $1,917 and nine hikers walked a route leading out to Rivers Cemetery. Dora Irvine staged vignettes celebrating the lives of several former Rivers community leaders who are buried at our cemetery. A barbecue was held at Rivers Health Centre afterwards, and many community members as well as several clients and staff from Rivers Rehab and Riverdale Personal Care Home dropped by for a burger or a smokie, raising a further $125. Event organizers are grateful to those who participated in the hike, the many donors, Rivers Health Centre for use of the barbecue and The Pettapiece Gardens, and Rick Lerch for doing the grilling.

Riverdale Palliative Care would like to acknowledge all those who have made recent donations in memory of loved ones. All funds raised in our community stay in our community, so thanks to all for your support! Anyone wishing more information about our local committee work or to express an interest in taking the volunteer course, please contact Esther Krahn at 204-328-7189.
