80 years ago, Friday, Nov. 13, 1936
Lesley Gunn had his right hand badly cut Monday afternoon while sawing wood north of Springhill. He was brought to Neepawa hospital and had his thumb amputated.
70 years ago, Thursday, Nov. 21, 1946
Mr. Herbert Cottingham, chairman and general manager of the Manitoba Power Commission since 1933, retired Oct. 31 and Mr. W.D. Fallis, formerly comptroller, has been appointed general manager.
Mr. W.D. Fallis, who now holds the position of general manager of the commission, was born in Neepawa and completed his education in Portage La Prairie, where he was residing when he joined the construction staff of the commission in 1930. He later held various positions in the held office staff, including that of statistician.
60 years ago, Thursday, Nov. 15, 1956
Gerald Parrott, chief of the Neepawa fire department, reported to the Press Monday that he had been informed by officials that the local Lions club will present a resuscitator to the fire department. Date of the presentation was not immediately known. The resuscitator is a portable apparatus, which provides mechanical, artificial respiration in the case of drowning, electric shock, gas, asphyxia or heart attack. It will be available in such emergencies, to residents of the Town of Neepawa and district.
50 years ago, Tuesday, Nov. 15, 1966
A $300,000 plant with a $100,000 plus budget – is sounding like big business, and it is. It affects virtually every resident of Neepawa, for without the service it provides, our modern life would be considerably less pleasant.
Neepawa’s waterworks plant and distribution system is among the best in rural Manitoba; and probably holds the record for the longest service. It was established in 1912.
40 years ago, Thursday, Nov. 18, 1976
The population of the village of Wellwood has increased temporarily while a work gang living in a work train are making the railway line disappear a lot faster than it was built in 1900, by men using horses and scrapers.
It was in 1900 the CPR ran a branch line to McCreary, around which the village of Wellwood was established.
It was a great day for the farm folks when the first train whistle sounded on April 26, 1901, for it meant the long haul to Carberry with grain (usually in winter) was over.
30 years ago, Thursday, Nov. 20, 1986
The Union of Manitoba Municipalities has written all of its members requesting support in opposing the reductions to RCMP attachments in Manitoba.
Residents in Deloraine, Winnipeg Beach and Reston were recently advised the government plans to close their RCMP detachments on Jan. 1, 1987.
Since the announcement, they have been fighting to have the closures reversed.
According to Manitoba’s attorney-general, Roland Penner, the government is still considering some options rather than the closures.
The closures are expected to save the province between $200,000 and $300,000 per year.
20 years ago, Monday, Nov. 19, 1996
Thieves made off with over $1,000 worth of property following a break-in to a home two miles south of Kelwood last weekend.
McCreary RCMP said the break-in was discovered by an area neighbor tending his hog barn. The home, which was unoccupied at the time of the break-in, had recently been sold.
RCMP said a freezer, curtains and rods, as well as an air compressor from an adjacent shed were stolen.
So far, no arrests have been made.

Neepawa phys-ed teacher Heather Douglas is being recognized by the Manitoba Physical Education Teachers Association, with the Middle Years award for 2005-06.
“I was very surprised [to hear I would receive the award],” Douglas said last week. “I wasn’t expecting this.”
The award recognizes outstanding contribution to physical education.
Douglas, who holds a bachelor of education degree with a phys-ed major, had been teaching at Hazel M. Kellington elementary school for over 15 years. She’s also coached gymnastics for 17 years, along with high school volleyball.
