Now that school-aged children are back in classes, parents with preschoolers who are looking to keep them busy and entertained can take advantage of a fun, free program at the Neepawa Public Library. Berni Myker has been running the story time program at the library since the beginning of the year. The group meets Friday mornings at 11 a.m., where they hear a story, play a round of eye spy and do a fun craft connected to the day’s theme. 

“It allows you to be a kid again!” Myker happily explains. “It’s one of those things where you can do anything and it’s okay…to the children, anything is new and exciting. As long as it’s fun and we see smiles, what more do we need?”

Myker says the library gets many volunteer readers from the Rotary Club of Neepawa, but is always looking for more people who have a passion for literacy and fun to come and help out. One of story time’s longest running volunteers is Wendy Woloski, who has been reading to children at the library since 2006.  “I like kids, you know, and even though I have a stutter, they don’t make an issue of it. So that’s good,” she enthuses.

Corrie Ford, a local mother of four children who are all under six years of age, says her family looks forward to story time every week. “I just like that it’s a free program for the kids to go to because they’re involved in so much,” she says. “The kids love it…and the crafts are always awesome!”

This current round of story time meetings ends on Oct. 28 and will start up again a few weeks later. Anyone interested in volunteering with the program is asked to call Debbie at the Neepawa Public Library at 204-476-5648.
