80 years ago Tuesday, August 4, 1936
Wellwood softball girls soundly trounced the locals Friday night at the exhibition ground. The score was said to be unmentionable.
70 years ago Thursday, August 1, 1946
Electricians from the Amalgamated Engineering Company have been at work since early June wiring farm homes in the Springhill area in preparation for the coming of Hydro and the first comprehensive farm electrification plan in that district. Hydro poles are in the district at present but no lines up at the present time.
60 years ago Thursday, August 1, 1956
The Home Grounds Competition, sponsored by the Neepawa and District Chamber of Commerce, was scored Thursday of last week and a number of entries, while not quite as large as last year, were very good. This year, two judges worked on the competition. Tom Rose of Newdale and B. Nicholson of Firdale.
These two judges were unanimous in their placing. They recommended that the Beautification Committee award first prize to C. Nicholson, second to J. Rodgers, third to W. Hares and honourable mention to C. Gault.
50 years ago Tuesday, August 2, 1966
Four people were treated for injuries at Neepawa Hospital following an accident early Saturday morning five miles west of Neepawa on PTH 4.
Drivers of the cars involved were Don McDougall of Neepawa and Josef Poeppi of Winnipeg.
According to reports from Minnedosa detachment RCMP, the McDougall car was proceeding east on PTH 4 when the driver apparently lost control coming around a curve and skidded into the path of the oncoming Poeppi car, a 1960 Volkswagen. McDougall was driving a 1966 Cheval. Both vehicles were extensively damaged.
There were two female passengers in the Poeppi car, a juvenile from Winnipeg and Miss Santos. The only passenger in the McDougall car was Dennis Foley of Neepawa. All but the McDougall youth were treated at Neepawa Hospital.
40 years ago Thursday, August 5, 1976
Twenty-year-old James Pasquill of Neepawa is in guarded condition in Brandon General Hospital following a two-vehicle mishap six miles east and one mile south of Erickson.
Driver of the second vehicle, Leo Zwarich of Erickson, also is in guarded condition.
The mishap occurred at approximately 4:00 pm on August 1. The Pasquill car, travelling north, came into collision with the southbound Zwarich truck at the top of a hill.
30 years ago Monday, August 1, 1986
Housing starts in Neepawa this year may set a record for construction in the 1980s, says Hartley Wilson of the Neepawa and Area Planning District.
Wilson said there have been eight housing starts in the area this year and he expects more before the year is over.
“We expect a record year in housing starts,” he said. “There’s usually a big rush around September to get the work done before winter.”
Besides the eight housing starts, Wilson said there have been 11 additional motel units built at the Westway Inn Motel.

Beautiful Plains Health Services and Harris and Neepawa Pharmacies came to an agreement which will allow both pharmacies to continue supplying drugs to the hospital and East View Lodge.
Although the agreement was reached last Wednesday, Beautiful Plains Health Services board chairman Dean Dietrich would release few details.

The 10th annual Lily Festival is being called one of the best ever, drawing bigger crowds in the past decade for almost every event.
“We had increased crowds at all the venues and the parade was bigger than ever,” said Lily Festival chair Ken Waddell. “All around, it was a very good event.”
“Even the lilies, which were blooming ahead of schedule, managed to put on a good show, “ Waddell said.
The only disappointment was the Doc Walker concert, which drew a smaller than expected crowd. Organizers were hoping to sell 1,000 tickets to break even. Around half that number ended up being sold.
