Summer at the food bank

Summer is almost here! Which means everyone’s normal routine gets traded in for vacations, camps, late night bonfires, visiting family and friends. It is such a wonderful time of year to enjoy the outdoors and our many hours of sunlight. One of the effects of all of us getting out of routine includes the donations to the food bank tend to dwindle for the summer. Unfortunately the use of the food bank does not correlate to this reduction in donations.

We ask you to think of the food bank in these days leading up to summer. There are donation hampers at each of the churches, Rivers Bigway Foods, Super Thrifty Pharmacy and monetary donations can be made to any board member or directly at Westoba Credit Union.

Thank-you for all the support you have given us already! We have received many pounds of food through the hampers this spring and monetary donations have helped us continue to provide those items that we run out of.

May saw the need for food remain the same as April: 17 family hampers, three couples and four single hampers were distributed; 45 children benefited from these hampers. Clients may access a hamper every two weeks; however, our hampers DO NOT supply enough food to feed anyone/everyone completely for that time period. They are supplemental to the food our clients are already having to provide. One of our main goals is to make sure some nutritious foods are available to our clients and in particular, the children.

We will be holding our annual meeting Sept. 14 at 7 p.m. at Prairie Crocus Regional Library in Rivers. You are more than welcome to come and listen or come and participate! We welcome all input into this community endeavour known as Riverdale Harvest.

If you or someone you know is in need of a hamper, please have them attend Zion Church on any Thursday between 9:30 and 11:30 a.m. You do not need an appointment.
