Publicity
The mission of Royal Canadian Legion is to serve veterans and their families, to promote remembrance and to serve our community and country with a special emphasis on youth. Last week several members made a triple-play in one afternoon by fulfilling all three parts of the mission.
It started with a trip to Rivers Elementary School to present Elicia Windsor a $30 cheque and certificate. Her black and white poster won the Grade 5/6 category at the district level and is now going to Manitoba-Northwest Ontario Command for judging. It is good to see schools and young people in particular being taught to remember our veterans and their service to our country.
Next was a trip to Riverdale Personal Care Home. They had called to let us know that James John Barron’s old black and white TV had faded away to a single line on the screen. The Poppy Fund provided a new flat screen television for him and the members set it up on Tuesday, April 19; one member actually read the directions!
In other news, the last meeting was very efficiently run but rather boring. No one said anything funny or foolish and business was conducted quickly. Scholarship information was delivered to Rivers Collegiate and one student has already expressed interest. A barbecue is being planned for May 15 and a tentative date for the golf tournament is June 25; details on both of these events will follow later.
