80 years ago Tuesday, March 10, 1936
The Neepawa Collegiate staff will have a grade 12 teacher for the 1936-37 term, it was decided at a meeting of the school board Friday night. Last term, the academics staff was reduced by one member, a commercial teacher engaged and the four teachers have been carrying on the extra class, Grade 12. As this arrangement has proved to crowd the teachers’ time too much, it was deemed not practical to continue the same for another term.

The Manitoba Red Cross needs 200,000 members to carry on a twofold task of great magnitude- the relief of suffering among peoples in war-ravaged Europe and Asia, and the expansion of a great post-war program of humanitarian service to meet the needs of our Canadian people. Manitoba’s quota last year was $600,000 and this year, although the campaign is a membership drive, it is hoped through the media of this appeal to raise one- third of this amount.

The Neepawa Game and Fish Association feels that the award for citizen of the year should be divided equally between two prominent local business men, in the persons of George Rey and George Wickett. These men volunteered the use of the basements of their business premises during the winter for the junior rifle club to use as an indoor range and extra room. Both these gentleman have done a great deal for junior citizens in the past and this gesture empathizes their keen interest in the youngsters.

Klassen awarded $492,841 home contract: B. F. Klassen Construction Limited, Winnipeg, was awarded general contract for construction of a half-million dollar elderly persons home in Neepawa at a meeting of the board Monday night. Klassen was the lowest of three contractors entering bids for the project. All three were Winnipeg firms.

Diane Ogkowski, Brenda McConnell and Marie-Ann Lockart took part in the west central area figure skating championships in Virden, February 23. Diane placed in the top three in the elementary ladies classification and travelled to Portage La Prairie March 13 to compete in the inter-area competition.

Rose Bowl winner: for her strong solo vocal performance during the Neepawa and District Fine Arts Festival, Barbara Lee of Neepawa was named the winner of the Rose Bowl and medallion donated by the Neepawa Lions Club. The vocalist was presented the awards by Dave McClelland on behalf of the Lions Club. Barbara sang the songs; “I Can’t Say No”, “Prairie Boy” and “My Shepherd Will Supply My Need” during the competition for solo vocalist. She was also the Rodney Gill Memorial Scholarship recipient to be used to further her vocal training.

Recreation districts and the services they provide are heading for change, Neepawa’s recreation director said at last Tuesday’s council meeting. John Douglas said part of the reason for the change is the demise of Manitoba Parks and Recreation Association. “A steering committee has been formed to decide what the new association should be,” said Douglas. “The association will play a part in changing the rule of recreation,” Douglas said. As the role expands, recreation districts are becoming involved in more than the administration of recreation opportunities and facilities.

A move to streamline government services by relocating positions to Portage La Prairie will reduce Neepawa’s Lands Branch to a bare-bones staff. Eleven positions from the Neepawa Lands Branch are being relocated, leaving the office with a staff of six. Positions at Minnedosa’s Agriculture Crown Lands are also affected by the restructuring. Ste. Rose MLA Glen Cummings said in the announcement, made Thursday by the Transportation and Government Services Minister Ron Lemieux, that this not only goes against the previous Conservatives’ missions to decentralize the government services, but makes no sense. Cummings said, “The NDP never did support decentralization, and we have seen how much they care about agriculture.”
