Sally Carter ordained deacon

St. James’ Anglican Church was filled on Sunday, June 28 for the ordination of Sally Virginia Carter, as deacon. Also ordained at the service were Cheryl R. Kukurudz of Brandon and Flora Young of The Pas. Twenty-four clergy dressed in red robes in celebration of the Feast of St. Peter and St. Paul, filled the choir loft and front seats. Family, relatives and friends sat in the remaining pews.

The church was filled with joyful singing to organ music by Marion Maguire. Jean Curtis accompanied Charlotte Castle, the celebrant’s daughter, who was soloist. 

The consecration of deacons was by the Right Reverend James Njegovan, Bishop of Brandon. Other clergical participants were Ven. Paul Curtis and Very Rev. Nigel Packwood (both former pastors at St. James’), archdeacons Rev. Tom Stradwick of Brandon and Rev. Michael Chartrand of The Pas and Ven. Lydia Constant of The Pas. Rev.  Father Don Bernhardt of Virden was preacher and Rev. Chad McCharles of Brandon was litanist. Sally’s presenters were Gordon Allen and Jean Ryall. Readers were Norman Short of Rivers, Elaine Larock of The Pas and Ven. Lydia Constant. Erin Longworth of Brandon was crucifer (carried the cross in a procession); the church bell was run several times at the end of the service.

Sally and her husband Stephen came from Britain in 2003 to farm in Oak River district. They were accompanied by a daughter Charlotte (Ben Castle) and four sons: Thomas, William, Edward and Robert. The couple has six grandchildren.

Sally has been a member of St. James’ Anglican Church since the year they came to the area, and has served as lay reader since 2008. She is also an active member of St. James’ Anglican Church Women.
