Engine in overhaul, caboose to come

A tanker and coal car are the latest wooden railway units to be placed on the grounds at Rivers Elementary School. The engine put there last year, and which provided an enjoyable play area for students, has been returned to the collegiate’s woodworking classroom for repairs and reinforcements. The project for next year is making the caboose; the engine will be back at the elementary school at the end of this month.

Woodworking classes taught by Denis Mulaire are held each school morning. The enrolment varies but the maximum has been 18 students. In progress at present is the construction of boxes for wood ducks, and bat boxes. These will be placed in the new wetlands area northeast of the soccer field, which is on the north side of Rivers.

Another collegiate woodworking project has been elevated wooden gardens which last year, were placed in the elementary playground area and on the north side of the high school. They are used for the growing of vegetables and flowers, with Brenda Sokoloski as instructor. 

Supplies and equipment for use in the woodworking classroom are available from various government vocational grants, Rivers and Area Community Foundation, Ducks Unlimited Canada and other sources. 

The woodworking room is located in the northwest corner of Rivers Collegiate Institute. It once housed the school library, which was moved to the south end of the building.
