March's month end - Rivers Police Service

Rivers Police Service had a relatively quiet month for March. I attended the elementary school and we discussed stranger danger, and what to do when approached by a stranger. I also attended a police board meeting in St. Anne, Man. and gave a small presentation on how the selection tool developed by the province worked for the chief of police position for Rivers. One file of interest was on March 2 when we were asked to attend the CN station as there was an unruly passenger on a Via Rail train. An adult male was arrested for breach of the peace and transported to Brandon.
No new violent or property crimes were reported, so at the end of the first quarter we remain at nine: one sexual offence, two assaults, five thefts under $5,000 and one property damage. Three other Criminal Code crimes were handled, all in the fraud category; total Criminal Code crimes are 14 (those listed plus two various other crimes such as breaches, public mischief).
No federal traffic-related charges were made and only five provincial traffic rules were broken, all in the “other” category which includes speeding, unregistered vehicle, no licence, etc.; one accident was reported. Ten charges have been laid to date in the other provincial traffic column and nine accidents for a quarterly total of 19 traffic cases handled by Rivers Police Service.
A clear record remains for Liquor and Gaming Control Act charges and no new bylaw infractions were handed in March. Two people were charged as an intoxicated person/breach of peace, which doubled the total to four so far this year.
Police assisted the public three times and provided police reports/finger prints (pardons) five times last month; these eight cases are largely responsible for the three-month total of 13.
As usual, miscellaneous statistics account for most of our activity; 19 new cases were filed. In March we had three mental health calls, one community relations, two alarms, two found properties and 11 miscellaneous, which includes unfounded complaints. Fifty of the 68 year-to-date miscellaneous statistics fall in the miscellaneous category of unfounded complaints.
