As the year 2014 comes to a close, how wonderful it is to report that Prairie Crocus Regional Library has been a busy place! Remember last week’s column when I encouraged holiday giving to your local library? There is still time to make that donation and receive an official charitable receipt.
Our goal is to be completely accessible to all persons (which is why we’re fundraising for a wheelchair accessible washroom) so that anyone may take advantage of the services offered. We have four computers available for public use, Internet and free Wi-Fi. We have a large selection of children’s and family movies available in DVD and VHS, for which we always accept donations. We have a good selection of magazines, ebooks and a projector for loan. If we do not have a particular book available in our collection, we can try to locate it at other libraries in Manitoba through our inter-library loan (ILL) system and bring the book here for you. If you have your own e-reader we can register you to access the ILL system so you can download free ebooks or books in our collection. We also offer printing, copying and faxing services at a minimal fee.
We have a preschool story time and fun time hour every Friday beginning at 10:30 a.m. Moms and dads also enjoy this time for socializing, so new parents to our community please don’t be shy! This would be a great way to meet other parents and a way for your children to socialize too. Simple crafts (geared toward three- to five-year-olds) are incorporated into this program about once a month and we include a healthy snack for special occasions throughout the year. We try to plan ahead to give notice on our craft days, so please pre-register your child so we can be prepared for how many may be attending.
Check out our new website (www.prairiecrocuslibrary.ca) where you’ll find information about our services, hours, etc. There is a patron satisfaction survey that we ask you to take a few minutes to complete and let us know how we’re doing, how we may improve our services, or give suggestions on what you would like to see at Prairie Crocus.
We are very pleased to announce we received a grant from Rivers & Area Community Foundation for $1,500 to fund our archival materials project. We will begin in the new year with organizing and cataloging archived materials that have been collected and/or donated to the library over the past several years. These materials will not be allowed to be checked out as other materials, but they will be easily accessible for public viewing.
We thank you all for your patronage in the past year and look forward to an exciting and prosperous new year. May everyone have a safe and happy holiday season!
