Possibly the largest crowd ever at this event crammed Rivers Legion Hall for the 18th annual trophy buck night; it was hosted by Rivers and Area Game and Fish Association on Saturday, Nov. 29. Despite a declining deer population which resulted in a bucks-only hunting season, 47 scored quality heads were entered. Following is a list of winners whose heads were scored by Lance Anderson, Dan Wilson (Cabela’s), Shawn Airey and Wayne Moffat.

Archery: non-member, Henry Hales, Rapid City, 105 3/8; member, no entry; junior non-member, Andy Gerrard, Rossburn, 148 6/8, junior member, no entry; ladies, Shawna Rubeniuk, Rossburn, 141 7/8; rifle: non-member, typical, Richard Shingoose, Rossburn, 178 1/8; member, typical, Shawn Airey, Rivers, 148; non-member, non-typical, Brian Yon, Brandon, 167 4/8; member, non-typical, Curtis Wiebe, Rivers, 135 7/8; muzzle loader, no entries in any of the four categories.

The head entry draw of a .17 calibre HMR rifle equipped with a 3x9x40 Barska scope was won by Shawn Airey. Two special card draws for a .243 calibre Savage rifle combo and a .50 calibre CVA muzzle loader were won respectively by Wayne Moffat of Virden and Nestor Rubeniuk of Rossburn. Adrienne Beaudin of Rivers took home a beautiful Terry McLean framed timber wolf print, donated by Ed MacKay of MacKay’s Consulting while Richard Wiebe of Rivers was the winner of a framed fishing print, courtesy of Bruno Bruederlin of Water Stewardship Services.

The most prestigious prize of the evening was a three-day/four night fly-in fishing trip for two to Healey’s Lodge at God’s Lake Narrows, donated by owner Sam Healey; a return flight for two was donated by Perimeter Airlines. The lucky winner of this s was Rivers’ own Mike Perreault, who has not yet decided who will share the experience. The bucket draw, always a perennial highlight of the evening, sent home many happy patrons with beautiful prizes donated by area businesses and association members.

Attendees were feted with a delicious lunch of pulled cured pork on a kaiser bun. Outstanding displays by Brandon Home Building Centre and by Healey’s Lodge capped another very successful evening.
