On Nov. 18 people gathered at Kenton Memorial Hall for the Social Club opening. There were card games, board games, Wii games and also laptop computers to use. (The hall now has a Wi-Fi connection.)
Come and check out the Social Club; they’ll meet every Tuesday afternoon from 2-4 p.m. and refreshments will be served. Enjoy a great afternoon of games, fellowship and fun for a small fee. There will be more information in next week’s news column.
Friday evening Nov. 21, there was a fundraiser supper for Winnipeg’s A Port in the Storm (APITS). Kenton’s own Wilma Bell stayed there earlier this year. She and her helpers co-ordinated a delicious supper as a fundraiser/awareness evening. APITS is a 12-suite home available for minimal daily rent for those dealing with health issues, be it patients themselves or family members of patients in the nearby St. Boniface Hospital. APITS’ executive director Stacey Grocholski spoke about this home away from home which opened in October 2012. In its two-year history APITS has already served more than 230 individuals, resulting in 400 stays. Nearly 40 per cent of individuals who use APITS reside within Prairie Mountain Health. APITS is planning to build a 40-suite addition and will incorporate parts of the current heritage building into the new construction. This $15 million project will proceed as funds are secured. APITS is supported entirely through donations (no government funding) which also offset costs to stay there. Approximately 187 people attended the supper, which raised over $2,000; to date more than $28,000 in donations has been received from the Virden/Lenore/Kenton/Hamiota area. Mid-West Arts Council brought Strathclair Theatre Chorus to Kenton Memorial Hall on Saturday, Nov. 22. The 41-voice choir includes Ted Mayor, Stan and Sheila Runions of Rivers, Lois Hyndman, Sally Carter, Wendy Radcliffe and Bruce Kingdon of Cardale, Chris, Shirley, Duncan and Rowena Martin of Rapid City and Brittany MacDonald of Brandon, formerly of Rivers. The choir is celebrating its silver anniversary so the theme for this year’s concert is 25 Years of Harmony; the songs they performed brought back many memories to the audience. Refreshments were served during the intermission.
