On Nov. 11 at 10:45 a.m. Kenton Royal Canadian Legion No. 118 held its Remembrance Day Service at Kenton Memorial Hall.

The service opened with the singing of O Canada. Reverend Doug Martindale from Kenton-Shiloh United Church brought the Call to Remember; Jack Houston read the honour roll. Last Post, silence and Reveille were next on the program, then the laying of wreaths: RM of Woodworth by Reeve Denis Carter; Branch 118, provincial and federal governments (one each) by Mike Ramsden; Ladies Auxiliary by Boots (Mary) Curtis; RCMP by Officer Ed Riglin of Virden; military by CFB Shilo soldiers; 4-H young people laid a

wreath as well. The act of remembrance was read with the audience saying, “We will remember them.”

The audience sang the hymn For the Faithful Who Have Answered, followed by Scripture read by Rev. Doug, who also recited  In Flanders Fields. This year’s speaker was Frances Wilson from Kenton. The choir, accompanied by Eileen Kent, sang Peace in the Valley. CrossRoads Community Church pastor Jason Hodson said a prayer which was followed by The Lord’s Prayer. The last hymn was O God Our Help in Ages Past and the service ended with the singing of God Save the Queen.

Announcements were that there would be a potluck lunch in the Legion clubroom following the service.

During the service the CFB Shilo soldiers (including Master Cpl. James Helphard who owns property in Bradwardine) fired a howitzer gun twice. We appreciate all the contributions they made towards the potluck lunch; there were 22 soldiers in attendance that day.

Without all those who took part in the service it would not have taken place. We are fortunate in our small town to be able to have a Remembrance Day service and are also fortunate to have two veterans in our midst — John Roseveare and Jack Houston; thank you men, for your service. Thank you Shilo soldiers, for your service as well.
