RCMP have a busy September long

Any long weekend is usually an active one for RCMP officers on traffic duty. For RCMP Traffic Services in the western part of the province, this past long weekend was no exception.

On Aug. 29 a total of 18 charges were laid under the Highway Traffic Act. This included a 21-year-old from out of the country charged for speeding when he was caught driving at 169 kilometres per hour on the Trans-Canada Highway west of Brandon. This resulted in a $927 fine. A total of five drivers were charged for travelling more than 30 kilometres per hour over the speed limit, including two that were charged for driving 150 kilometres per hour and fined $705 each.

That same night, RCMP officers with West District Traffic Services were able to apprehend a 22-year-old Rivers man after he attempted to evade police. He is being investigated for dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, flight from a police officer and mischief, due to the damage his vehicle did to farmers’ fields in the area.

The evening of Aug. 30 was just as busy with a total of 27 charges laid which included one driver travelling at 150 kilometres per hour, one at 142 kilometres per hour and six more at more than 130 kilometres an hour. Westman RCMP also handed out one alcohol-related 24-hour roadside suspension.

On Aug. 31 and Sept. 1, West District Traffic Services wrote another 52 tickets, of which 48 were for speeding. Of those 48, 15 were issued for travelling more than 30 kilometres per hour over the speed limit and one was for more than 50 kilometres per hour over. The total for the September long weekend in the West District was 97 charges, 91 of which were for speeding: 25 tickets for more than 30 kilometres per hour over the speed limit; two tickets for more than 40 kilometres per hour over the speed limit; five tickets for more than 50 kilometres per hour over the speed limit.
